Setting up a dev environment is documented fairly well.

I'm considering offering a VirtualBox "appliance" (disk image) that people
can just download and start using because the dependencies take a little
while to all download and install. Took me about 5 hours to get a build to
complete from a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.
