When LMMS asks me to choose a backend on startup, I check with "lsof |grep snd" to see who is holding the sound device captive. Sometimes it's an LMMS I forgot on another desktop, sometimes some program has automagically started JACK, which lingers in the background and needs a "kill -KILL" to go away.
