Sorry for delayed response. I'll try to clarify a bit here...

No no, it doesn't have to increase the height. What I'm saying is to
center the text, so that there's the same amount of distance from the
top of the text->top edge and bottom of text->bottom edge. All you need
is to move the text, the size of the banner can stay the same.

Yeah, I don't think it's a big concern. Again, to be clear, speaking of
the internal margins in the image. Also, very small screens often scale
the content anyways... Anyway, as long as it's even on fullscreen,
that's good enough.

Cool. JPG's aren't really useful for anything other than photos... the
artifacting on them is very noticeable and ugly on all
computer-generated graphics. If size is a concern, it would be better to
use GIF, since there are so few colours in the background that you can
probably get away just fine with an 8-bit palette. (Sure, it's an
obsolete format, but it still works pretty well for some corner cases.)
Just don't use dithering when you convert to 8-bit, that'll look ugly...
if it turns out that 8-bit isn't enough after all, then an optimized PNG
is a good second choice.

I haven't had much chance to look at the rest of the site yet, but if
the style is similar, then I'd suggest the same change for the buttons
there as well. Just keep the gradient subtle - too much looks garish,
but just the right amount gives the button some depth and makes it stand
out as UI element.

Also, not sure if we already do this, but highlighting on hover would be
a good idea - just a slight increase in brightness when hovered over.
This could be a short CSS transition, maybe 100ms or so.

The image can stay the same size. Just increase the length of the alpha
gradient...
