Ok, so as far as providing backwards compat as a 3rd-party option... I think the actual note data (as it is saved in the project files) is not going to change much if at all - that's one area where we don't really need to do any drastic changes.
This means that it should be perfectly possible for someone to write a plugin or 3rd-party tool which extracts the note data from an old project file and saves it as a new LMMS project file or exports it directly into LMMS. If all you want is the note data - that should be totally doable. If someone wants to step up and do it, I'll be happy to offer whatever assistance/support I can. But again, I can't do everything, so this depends entirely on whether someone wants to actually put in some effort here... Moving on, a status update: I now have automation playback working, and per-track automation is pretty much finished. It's pretty neat because you can move a knob, click on the automation track and the knob value is saved instantly where you click, then move the knob again and click on another position... really streamlines the workflow a lot, if I say so myself. Automation tracks are also automatically named with the knob/control name you connect them to. You can of course rename them like before. Next on the agenda is tempo track, controllers and getting instrument tracks playing notes again... then maybe giving some attention towards sample tracks and maybe finally getting the play-from-any-position feature working. Pretty exciting stuff going on.
