IIRC, the bug is corrupted output that only happens on 64-bit
architectures. Everything works fine on 32-bit.

This leads me to believe there's some point in the code where incorrect
assumptions are made wrt. bit width of some variable or other.

Uninitialized values are good to fix, too.
