Welcome on board, Ralph. Currently lack in C++ practice wouldn't be any problem at all, because the main goal for now is to ship a release with the current available code base. This needs to be done in the next very few months to not loose the project to Attic. Torsten Wiebesiek has offered to go through the release process[1], but struggled on build problems on his platform[2]. So from my opinion it would be of great help if you were able to help getting log4cxx build on a Linux platform using autotools. Additionally, everything that helps us to understand the release process in general is most welcome as well.
