Any time someone is about to contribute a large scale path affecting several core classes, I like to step back and ask "whoa, this is big, is it necessary? If it's necessary, how come it hasn't been done in the years that log4j has been available?" I haven't had time to think about your patch that deeply, and while I can't speak for other developers I'm suspicious as to why there are no easier ways to do what you want. Technically, to answer that part of your question, you would contribute one diff file for every source code file you changed.
