The decision to make it "final" was to give the development team flexibility to adjust the implementation without breaking user subclasses. The class might not have been designed for subclassing as well. But it seems useful to expose and factor out some of the rollover behaviors. In particular, the compression behavior seem rather arbitrarily included. It would make sense to use "final" for public methods and create "protected" methods that users can hook into.
