I took a brief look at the patch and nothing obvious popped out at me. I didn't
apply it yet. But in looking at it I think I agree with your comment that
something similar to the sample needs to go into the API and core. It seems
like it would be nice to be able to create a message wrapper for another
message to add the properties so that any message could have properties
associated with it.
