Great that you are benchmarking to get an idea of the relative performance of
various solutions. You'd be surprised at how few people actually measure this.
FYI, please take a look at the log4j-perf module. We have standardized on
[JMH|http://openjdk.java.net/projects/code-tools/jmh/] as our benchmarking tool
to help us avoid the
[pitfalls|http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/java/architect-benchmarking-2266277.html].
About the ThreadLocalStringBuilderProvider idea, can you show how this would be
used in layout code? I am specifically interested in whether this would be
garbage-free.
