I agree. I don't use it now, but it seems cool. But it's badly misnamed.
Deprecate the assert, and make a new one; e.g. logConditionally(cond[,
level], msg[, exception]) (defaults to level error or info?)

(I personally find a bunch of the things in log4j misnamed, though.
Category.. Now, _why_ is is called category, and not Logger or something
like that?)
