I'll answer my own question, as I have just found the answer in the log4j
FAQs (doh!). I need to get a JAXP compatible XMLparser.

Subject: question about using XML Property Files
Hi
I am just trying out the DOMConfigurator class so as to be able to use an
XML property file. My code compiles, but when I run it I get the following
error:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/w3c/dom/Node.
Am I missing something from my classpath? I'm new to XML, so forgive me if
this is a dumb question.
