Georg,
    It is my understanding that all the contributions have to fall under the
Apache License (mine certainly does) so you are free to do almost anything with
it.  Personally I strongly encourage you to subclass as that is one of the most
useful features of OO programming -- in fact the JDBCAppender I contributed was
written explicitly with subclassing in mind.  If you do fiddle with the
JDBCAppender I contributed I'd love to see what you do with it, but you are
under no obiligation.
