It is probably worth reaching out to the Apache Kafka PMC again. Since the upcoming Kafka 4.x will use Log4j 2 Core instead of Log4j 1/Reload4j, Kafka recently dropped their Log4j 1 appender[1].
I reached out on `dev@kafka`[2] to see if anybody is interested in at least co-maintaining a Log4j Kafka appender. I didn't get any answers then, but we might try again.
