It should be possible to write a simple asynchronous forwarding appender by subclassing the ForwardingAppender, overriding the Append method and using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem to schedule an asynchronous call.

I've wrote something that might be usefull. It is eneugh for my needs. I've been using it only with log4net-1.2.0 beta 8 NET 1.1 and I don't know how will it behave on other frameworks/platforms.
