Kelly,
The problem is that GMail's POP support is kinda broken.  Here's the 
somewhat technical blog post where I investigated the issue:

The short answer is that GMail is actually sending me the data you're 
seeing, when I tell it to "send me the latest messages".  If you switch 
to using IMAP instead of POP, things should work a lot better.
