Hi Doug,
LON-CAPA uses a message digest of the unique resource identifier (the
"symb"), the internal LON-CAPA courseID, and the exam CODE to create
the random seed.
So if 104D section and the 104O section are different LON-CAPA courses
(with different courseIDs), which the LON-CAPA Course Catalog for the
uiuc domain for CHEM for Fall 2014 indicates is the case, then exams
generated in the two courses would be expected to use different seeds
for the same CODE.
For future semesters you might consider aggregating the 104D and 104O
students in a single LON-CAPA course, but affiliating the student with
different groups (one for D, one for O), and then setting parameters
(e.g., content access etc.) based on group affiliation etc.
For now, you could create yet another course (with enrollment from
both 104D and 104O courses) and generate the exam there for students
from both the D and O sections. That would mean students would need
to log-in to the "exam" course to see their submission history etc.
Alternatively, you could set student access dates in the exam course,
such that student roles would have already expired, print and grade
the exam in the "Exam" course and then export the grades, followed by
uploading grades into a score upload form in the separate 104D and
104O courses. However, that approach would provide students with only
the points earned in the exam, and no view of their submission
history/correct answers for their randomization etc. for individual
exam questions.

Hi All,
Here's a question from an instructor I work with. I have done next
to nothing with exams generated in Lon-Capa and he's the resident
expert on it, so we need outside help with this.

I have the online course and the "normal course". Ideally, I would
like them to all take the same exam so I only have to have claire
run off 1 set of copies.
I think this might be a problem though, as when I make the exam pdf
in the everything works fine. When I go to try to print the same
code number exam in the 104O class, I get a different copy of the
exam.
I'm guessing a different random seed was used in each section. Is
there any way for me to have the 104O section use the same exam
versions?

I guess the bottom line is, is there a way to get the two courses to
use the same random seed for the same exam codes?
Thanks!
Doug
