Nate,

Can the username then be changed at the end of the semester?

The idea is that end access dates will have been set for the student's roles in the current semester's course(s) such that they will expire at the end of the semester, or soon thereafter. If that were the case the student could continue to log-in to LON-CAPA using the old username after the end of the semester, but there would be no roles to select from the student's Courses screen. However, if there were a need for the student to access the old course(s) and view grades etc., the expired role(s) could be re-enabled.

For the new semester's courses, the student should be enrolled with the new username, and will be able to log-in normally (e.g., with institutional authentication and/or Single Sign On). In addition, automated enrollment should automatically create the new username and enroll the student in the new semester's courses.

Once support for virtualized usernames is available in LON-CAPA (bug 4453) there will no longer be a need for the steps described in my previous post.

Can the username then be changed at the end of the semester? Will this prevent the user from accessing courses they were enrolled in under the old username from prior semesters?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: [LON-CAPA-users] legal name change/user id change

Hi Doug,

Virtualization of usernames is planned for a future LON-CAPA release
to accommodate this type of situation.

What is currently done at MSU in the case where a student changes
his/her MSUNetID (used as the username in the msu domain)
mid-semester, is to have the user continue to log-in using the "old"
MSUNetID until the end of the semester. A domain coordinator will
change the first name, last name and "permanent" e-mail address
associated with the "old" username in LON-CAPA.

In the event that changing an institutional username also causes
authentication to stop working for the "old" username, then a domain
coordinator can also change the authentication type to "internal" and
direct the student to (a) use /adm/resetpw to set a password, and
thereafter log-in via /adm/login (i.e., not use SSO) for the remainder
of the semester.

If you use automated enrollment there will be an entry in the
autoenroll.log file noting that a potential username change has been
detected (based on the student/employee ID being used for two
different usernames - the one in LON-CAPA -- "old" username -- and the
one in the institutional classlist -- "new" username). Automated
enrollment does not drop the old username from the classlist and add
the new username to the classlist in this instance.

Hi All,

We have a student who's had a legal name change and consequently
changed their user name as well. I think the instructor can
certainly work around this situation to merge information from the
two different users in Lon-Capa for calculating grades, etc. but I
thought I'd throw the situation out on the listserv in case there's
a way to change the user's ID in Lon-Capa and preserve their
existing work(?) Thanks as always,

Doug
