Nathan,

As regards the messages from "LON-CAPA module check" ...

On Ubuntu these two files: loncapa_apache.conf and startup.pl should be in
/etc/apache2, so you don't need to move them. Those files are expected to be
found in /etc/httpd/conf on RHEL/CentOS/Oracle/Rocky/AlmaLinux and Fedora. The
fact that Checksumming::get_checksums(), used in nightly module checks, is
looking in /etc/httpd/conf tells me that the Linux distro is being
misidentified.

If you run:

/home/httpd/perl/distprobe

as user www, the output from that will tell you what Linux distro LON-CAPA
thinks you are running.

If it does not report ubuntu24 then there must be some extra file(s) or missing
file(s), (most likely in /etc) which are causing distprobe to report an
incorrect distro.

As for /home/httpd/perl/loncontrol that file is needed for ubuntu24.

If it is being reported as "unrequired" that is likely because the file
ownership/permission is not correct. (It is expected to be owned by root and
to have 0700, i.e., rwx------ permissions). Less restrictive permissions would
mean that get_checksums() running as user www would be (unexpectedly) able to
extract a version number for loncontrol, which would then lead to it being
reported as an extra file.

As regards delivery of email from the "Forgot Password?" utility, the first
step in troubleshooting would be to look in /var/log/mail.log to see if any
attempts to send outbound mail are logged after the "Proceed" button has been
pushed for the "Reset forgotten LON-CAPA password" web form.

Lastly, given the content of your post, the lon-capa-admin mailing list seems a
better fit than lon-capa-users.

I have a server up and running that students are using, loncapa.winona.edu The
system is up to date via apt.

When students (or I) click the "forgot password" link on the front page, no
email ever arrives. I've checked the timeouts (2hrs) from the dc side and they
seem ok. The system sends me regular status updates via email - it just seems
to be the forgot password option that's not running.

At the same time, I'm getting the module/file mismatch error below.

1. Can I swap the files from one location to another (per the locations below)
and fix file location problem?
2. Will swapping the file locations below also fix the send forgot password
email problem.

Update check result -- Tue Jan 13 04:10:33 am 2026 (UTC)

5 differences were found between LON-CAPA modules installed on your server
(winonal1) and those expected for the LON-CAPA version you are currently
running.

The following 2 local files appear to be missing:
/etc/httpd/conf/loncapa_apache.conf (expected rev: 1.215.2.30)
/etc/httpd/conf/startup.pl (expected rev: 1.41.2.4)

The following 3 files are not required by the release you have installed:
/etc/apache2/loncapa_apache.conf (local rev: 1.215.2.30)
/etc/apache2/startup.pl (local rev: 1.41.2.4) /home/httpd/perl/loncontrol
(local rev: 1.44.2.1)
