Thanks for the comments Mark. Not contributed to this group for a while as
it is literally probably about 6 years since I was last in London.

That should change on 16th January as courtesy of £9 each way tickets we are
on the 7am train from Newcastle down and the last train back. Will
hopefully have something to contribute after then.

So here's a question - bearing in mind light will probably be quite poor on
this date, can anyone recommend any locations in the centre?

Christopher

Subject: [London Bus Scene] Re: Pick your brains - camera choices

Hello.

Just seen this thread and thought I had better contribute
something...
Peter , I now have a canon 50D replacing a 30D and before that a 300D.
So I have some insight into these cameras.
Firstly I have always liked the canon sensors and it has been
interesting to see how they have changed with the increasing pixel
density .
The 300D was very "clean" and the 30D was little different . With the
50D things have changed a lot . Initially I was disapponted with the
image quality .
The images looked very different at full resolution , quite soft at
times . However with time I began to appreciate the qualities of the
sensor . Now I happily use 800 ASA or even 1600ASA with little visible
noise .
As to the lens . The 24-105 L is a superb lens . However mine went
wrong ..!! and on the spur of the moment I bought an 18-200 mm lens
(canon). Now this is a "cheap" lens that all the reviews slag off
terribly .
However I found that it serves well as a good walkaround , flexible
lens . It has its weakneses . The image quality is not as good as the
L but when resized and photoshopped I doubt many could tell them
apart.
Of interest is that the copy I have has a slight magenta colour
cast ... !! I use this lens if I go to Europe . It is lighter than the
L and saves carrying two lenses around all day .
In the end I got the L lens repaired and so now I have the two . ( I
still prefer the L however )
Personally I have never had any issues with using a cropped sensor
with the L lens . I like the FF Canons but they are so heavy .
Christopher , I would go with a 50D . I found that the 500D was just
too small for my hands . Glad to see you are still into the bus
photography . It's been a while since I have seen any of your shots .

I think I have rambled on enough .
Everybody have a good new year .
Mark

IMAGE SIZES are important, as is QUALITY. Try not to post very large photos
or very small ones. Pixel width should be no bigger than 1600 and no smaller
than 800. This allows members to view the images full screen, depending on
their monitor settings.

Quality should be sharp and maintained when resizing images. File sizes
should be around the 250KB - 600KB mark, but not bigger than 800KB. Try to
keep somewhere in the middle of all this, around 400KB can produce good
images with no loss of quality.

You can easily reduce the size of images using
Google's own picassa http://picasa.google.com/ or
Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/
