I'm using 8.1.5
Planning to upgrade to 8.1.6 some time...

It's perfecly possible. There were some bugs in the installer
which suggest that they didn't test it on Linux at all...
TBH I don't use dbstart, I just start Oracle manually after boot.
But on my system, svrmgrl says:
Oracle8i Release 8.1.5.0.2 - Production
With the Java option
PL/SQL Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
What does yours say?
(Surely it isn't possible to install Oracle without PL/SQL)

I'm not a proper DBA, but I know a bit about
administering Oracle databases...
