Well, I'll come out of the closet then.
I like PHP a lot.
It has a shallow learning curve, you can take an HTML page and just insert
bits of PHP into it as you go along. It has MySQL suppport built in along
with GD functions and LDAP, XML etc, so you don't have to constantly search
around in CPAN to get something you want working. I wrote a small project on
Linux with PHP/MySQL, and ported it to Windows with no code changes.
If you are talking about commercial sites with heavy server loads, I'm sure
perl could beat PHP, and I'm sure the flexibility makes perl more of a power
users tool, but I've not seen PHP pushed in that direction.
I find it so easy to get things wrong when I'm writing perl, but so easy to
get them right with PHP.
