Is this really a problem? Most working programmers don't need the extra money, surely? People publish articles because it enhances their visibility and reputation, not for the cash... The entire academic periodical industry is based on the idea that authors don't get paid, and it seems to work. I can't imagine Einstein not bothering to write up the theory of relativity because he wouldn't get paid for it. .robin.
