well how about the following as a dot com idea ...
a secure site, that publishes boot disks, these can then be run
initially after a new system is installed[1] which scans FS's and
uploads the checksums, sizes, etc. to the website[2]
then periodically the systems can be rebooted with the boot disk in
check mode, to see if things have changed
you could probably do the same thing with a two disk (cd) system, one
that was the boot and one which was the RO list of checksums, but then
the target audience is reduced to those with CD burners.
admins could probably do this all themselves, but they would just
never get around to it, whereas a simple service would cost much less
than their time
