I think MOP (meta object protocol) is a modern approach to OO, it's found in Perl 6, Badger, Mouse (and mouse? ferret ? I lose track..) Moose is the biggest, most used and most complete implementation, but badger looks pretty good and (according to the slides) delivers the 80% you're likely to actually use.
