In that case they are very stupid as those protections come into force as soon as you have been with an employee for a year on whatever basis even if the contract is not specifically a "permanent" one. The only difference with a fixed term contract is that it can end without further notice upon expiration of the fixed term except that if it has been renewed and there would be a reasonable expectation that it will be further renewed notice would be required to end it.
