Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past
six. I’ll have all the day’s news including the latest on how our region's
airports have been affected by today's terror alerts. Tightened security
measures have been stepped up at all UK airports, including Humberside and
Robin Hood airport. And all passengers hoping to travel today are facing long
delays and are restricted with the hand luggage they are allowed to take. We’ll
have the very latest on these terror alerts and how it will affect travellers
in our region.

Plus as campaigns continue against the proposal for an incinerator at Saltend,
we'll have a head to head discussion on the sofa tonight, between the
campaigners and a Professor from the University of Hull. Professor Lynne
Frostrick was on the programme recently and angered campaigners with her views
on how waste should be dealt with. We’re offering campaigners the opportunity
to put their concerns and questions to her direct tonight and you can see that
debate on the programme tonight at half past six.

I'll have the full story on the suspension of the Interim Chief Executive of
the Lincolnshire Health Trust and more on the woman, who is accused of jumping
from the Humber Bridge holding a child. Plus also on the programme, I'll be
chatting to Basil Brush before he comes to the region with his new tour. A very
busy programme tonight. I hope you can join me on BBC One at half past six.

Emails

Thanks very much indeed for all the emails on a variety of subjects. Keep them
coming in. If you’ve got a problem that you think we could deal with on the
programme, then drop me a line. A group of singers last night asked for my help
to find more members. So, if you need help then get in touch – [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

First up from the emails here. There’s a note from Clare from the Hull School
of Health and Social Care. Clare Sullivan, thank you very much indeed for
getting in touch. She says, “I’m glad that something is being said about
probiotic foods, because I had a very nasty experience with the yoghurt drinks.
In November 2004, I started drinking the yoghurt drinks every morning and soon
noticed that my asthma was getting quite severe. I didn’t know why and blamed
it on winter weather. I ran out of drinks and didn’t get around to buying any
more for a few weeks. During that time, my asthma returned to normal, but I
didn’t make the connection to those products until I bought some more. The day
after I started drinking them, my asthma started to worsen again. I had a
massive asthma attack, which the doctor blamed on the bacteria in the probiotic
drinks. So I think they should carry a warning for asthmatics!” So of course,
that’s Clare’s view, but perhaps that is of interest to asthma!
 tics.

There’s a note here from Margaret on speed limits. I was talking about them
being lowered to as low as twenty miles an hour on country roads. She says,
“Speed limits are all very well and good, but however, most people
self-regulate anyway. No matter what the speed limit is, you’ll always get the
wannabe Jenson Buttons, who seem to take on the winding country lanes and see
them as a challenge. Speed limits should be realistic on the other roads to
keep the traffic moving.” So, thank you very much indeed for that one. And keep
the emails coming in.

Weight

There is a new simple test, apparently, which shows if you need to diet. You
need to measure your waist circumference at your naval and your hip
circumference from the tip of your hip bone. Women should measure their waist
circumference halfway between the bottom of their ribs and the top of their hip
bone and also hip circumference from the widest point of their hips to their
buttocks. This is the new advice. It says that simply being overweight does not
in itself greatly increase the chances of a heart attack, but scientists have
made a direct link between the waist hip ratio and the risk of cardio vascular
disease. The waist hip ratio is measured by dividing the person’s waist
measurement by their hip statistics. For men that should be no higher than 0.90
and for women the maximum should be 0.83. Did you follow that? No, I didn’t
think you did. But all the information is there and try it if you want. The
best thing to do is to ignore it all though and feel happy with the !
 way you are.

Countdown

You’ve probably heard by now that Countdown is moving after over twenty years
being made in Yorkshire and it’s now being moved to London. Why? Because Des
Lynam doesn’t want to travel the two hundred odd miles to Yorkshire to film it.
So the programme is moving to London. Carol says that in the course of a day
when they’re making Countdown, they record five episodes of Countdown in a day.
She has to find five different outfits. She says though that all Des has to do
is to change his jacket and he keeps the same trousers on for weeks. And, “a
blue shirt is a blue shirt”, says Des. “Why change it?” So there you are. Carol
has also admitted that she is a huge fan of Deal Or No Deal on Channel 4. “I
love it”, she says. Whilst watching the programme during filming, she says,
“people are always knocking on my door telling me to get back on the set, but I
won’t leave until the crucial moment.” That’s telling us isn’t it? There you
are. The show has been moved to London just because!
of Des Lynam. Countdown continues, but I wonder how the ladies of Yorkshire
feel about that one. Your views on that of course are gratefully received.

Water

It’s not a problem for us, of course, because we’re not suffering under a hose
pipe ban, but other parts of the country are not allowed to water private
gardens with a sprinkler or a hose, or wash cars or leave a porous hose running
under a hedge. There’s lots of things that they’re not allowed to do, but it
seems that three quarters of a million people are creeping out in the middle of
the night, some at two o’clock in the morning, to water their gardens so that
they don’t get caught. Can you believe that? The person that has been
highlighted in the paper the most is poor old Rod Stewart, who has a football
pitch outside of his house. It is absolutely immaculately green and they’re
saying that he must have been watering it during the summer.

The hot weather has caused a big problem too for this toxic blue-green algae. I
think it’s something to do with lilies and weed, but it’s turning great swathes
of rivers in this country green. And I noticed that in Queen’s Gardens
yesterday in Hull, the pond there is roped off now and even the top of that is
green as well.

Michelle

As you know Michelle Dewberry, the winner of the Apprentice, who comes from
Hull, has been in the news. You never know what to believe either. According to
the paper, Sir Alan has put his pregnant apprentice star on leave at the
moment. It seems he could be regretting his decision to choose her. The
business tycoon is believed to be furious at stories about the twenty-six year
old and Miss Dewberry’s private life, including claims that she’s pregnant by
rival contestant Sayed Ahmed. She is said to have been put on gardening leave
from her £100,000 a year job while she waits for Sir Alan to return from
holiday to decide her future again. I don’t know whether there’s anything in
this story or if this is just tittle tattle. But it’s in the papers at the
moment. Of course, the former checkout girl beat off top competition from fifty
thousand other people to win the BBC Two show and one thing we would like to do
is to have Michelle back on the programme again. So, if any of her f!
amily and friends in Hull are reading the Levy Letter, then pass on the
message to Michelle for us. Give her my email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm as
usual.

Take care,

Peter
