Hi,
It was only two days ago that I received this Lemote netbook, getting
it mainly for text editing, and to learn about MIPS and the debian os.
But you see I am still very much a novice in the domain and am liable
to destroy the computer with a wrong keypress..
The problem I am having now is that the computer will not completely
boot up, displaying an error message,
"Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!"
I've looked online to see if others have had similar issues, but
cannot not find a case like mine that I can fully understand. There
are
probably many possible causes, and hopefully solutions as well. I am a
complete naive in this realm, but I am here to learn. I received this
error message after having to reboot the computer before because the
screen went all wacky displaying itself in a lower-than-usual
resolution and in three copies in a droste effect fashion.. This
happened after I sought to upgrade the computer using the sudo apt-get
upgrade command. That was obviously not a wise choice because the
computer was working just fine before, and there was really no need to
upgrade.. While the computer was upgrading there were a few packages
that were being installed that could not be authenticated, but I
installed anyway because after a quick glance at the list of packages
I saw some of them which would come in handy later. Many of those
unauthenticated packages I knew nothing of yet thought they must be
important if they are to appear here... the packages were being
installed, and then the computer informs me that a config file (not
entirely sure, I really should have kept notes; it may have been
called "sources.list") needed to be rewritten or may it said that the
package source had an alternative.. so I went along with it. that was
that. Excuse my ignorance please, I expected to run into problems but
not ones so catastrophic. Now all I can do to communicate with the
Lemote is by stepping into PMON and invoking commands from there...
When I enter PMON there is some text above the prompt which says "BEV
in SR set to ZERO" .. I am not sure if that is normal or what..
I hope someone can help me out and show me how to fix this problem as
I am not sure what powerful forces I am mingling with here...
Meanwhile I am looking around on on linux-loongson community forums
and wiki.
