Indeed. I started thinking about how to handle the planar -> packed YUV conversion for better Xv performance, and then found multiple places (including my inbox!) where you suggested implementing it in pixman. If you're still interested, I'd love to have some help. I'm always in #gentoo-mips and #cairo (the closest thing we have for a pixman IRC channel).
