So apparently the reason ferret doesn't work with jruby is because
jruby doesn't work with native c extension gems. Apparently the
authors of c extension gems need to provide a jruby version of their
gem. I don't think this will happen with ferret because ferret is a
port of the java lucene engine to ruby. I am guessing that the author
isn't too interested in porting his c/ruby port of a java app back to
java so we can run jruby. I'm drafting an email to the creator of
jruby now to confirm all of this.

This might finally be the reason to switch to sphinx. I'll keep
everyone posted.
