I haven't looked at GDM, so I can't talk to it (hint, hint anyone?).  But KDM 
is _basically_ XDM renamed.  They even use the xdm-config file, etc.

The difference is in the /path/to/share/config/kdmrc file (substitute 
/opt/kde, /opt/kde2, /usr, whatever, for /path/to above).  XDM doesn't have an 
equivalent file to configure the types of things configured in KDM.  Most of 
this file, though, is configured from the GUI (Control Panel).

So I suggest (unless GDM is wildly different), sticking to configurations of 
the xdm-config, Xservers, Xsession, and Xaccess files.  Stuff like:
