Re: Upcoming changes to the LPIC-2 program and other initiatives

Background

LPI's certification program is continually monitored for technical
currency as it relates to job tasks in the IT industry. The last memo
for publishers and other learning content developers provided
information on the republish to LPIC-1 that is scheduled for April 2012.
Published consecutively, LPIC-2 is currently approaching the 2.5 year
mark for revision to the exam objectives and a republish is scheduled
for July 1st 2012. Full information on our exam maintenance cycle can be
found here:

http://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/ObjectiveMaintenanceSchedule#Revision_Life_Cycle

Summary of Changes

The proposed changes for LPIC-2:

   1. Explicit coverage of the ext4 filesystem.
   2. Explicit coverage of the IPv6.
   3. Basic feature knowledge of encrypted filesystems.
   4. Basic feature knowledge of xfsdump/xfsrestore commands.
   5. Explicit coverage of Linux 3.0 kernel.

Impact to Courseware Developers:

The impact to courseware and book authors should be very small.
Feedback indicates that most courseware and book authors should be able
to implement these changes in a matter of a few weeks.

Future Looking Changes:

The recent Product Development Survey included the opportunity for
people to suggest major changes to the ongoing development of our exams.
LPI sought input on technologies to consider in the next complete
update of our exams in 2014.

Overwhelmingly, there were suggestions on increasing coverage of
virtualization in our exams: in LPIC-1, LPIC-2 or as an adjunct exam on
top of LPIC-1 were amongst the options suggested. This lends further
credence to the idea that virtualization knowledge is working it's way
down the experience stack to where juniors are expected to be able to
deal with the subject.

Cloud management tools were also hot topics for consideration in future
updates (or in LPIC-3 exams).

Additional suggested technologies to watch or consider include btrfs,
system monitoring tools (such as nagios), cgroups, puppet (move from
lpic-3 to lpic-2), NFSv4 (move from lpic-3 to lpic-2) and capacity
planning (move from lpic-3 to lpic-2).

Linux Essentials:

A new program is currently under development which is meant to prepare
youth and those new to Linux and Open Source for work in the IT sector.
Provisionally named, "Linux Essentials", exam development for this new
program is currently underway and is scheduled to be published in June
of 2012 for an initial pilot in the LPI EMEA region. Exam objectives
are publicly available on the LPI wiki at:
http://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/LinuxEssentials.
