The biggest advantage of rsyslog is that rsyslog.conf looks very familiar with the traditional syslog.conf. The configuration syntax of syslog-ng is very different and I suppose only SLES and Arch Linux use it as the default (although both have rsyslog packaged). I would hate to expend time in my classes explaining yet another configuration file syntax, so to me syslog-ng in LPI is not an option at all.
