Removal of it from 2.5 seems to be withdrawn, and it still has many
advantages.

The directory configuration is the default in the installation of most
distributions, but its use is more complex. I usually stay with the
configuration file (that can easily versioned and commented) on every
installation I'm doing, not having strong need for no downtime on
restart for configuration changes. And where no downtime is needed for
high availability scenarios what you need is HAProxy or the like, not
directory configuration.
