I agree with Ingo that awk probably shouldn't be on the LPIC-1 exam, although 
not because it isn't useful or important, but simply because we don't have the 
space to do it adequate justice.

Although if it was up to me, I'd scrap the weight-3 basic vi objective and 
replace it with a weight-3 basic awk objective in a heartbeat ;^)

Incidentally, the tuxcademy “Advanced Linux” training manual (i.e., the non-
sysadmin content of LPI-102) has covered basic awk usage since essentially 
forever, although awk isn't part of the LPIC-1 objectives. This is simply 
because awk is a useful tool to know for an advanced Linux user or sysadmin – 
it can in fact do things that are otherwise hard, inelegant, or impossible to 
do with the shell and other more basic utilities. In particular, the bar to 
understanding awk, for simple use cases, is a lot lower than for Perl, Python, 
or (heaven forbid!) Ruby.
