Hello Neil,

You have 3 options. Before that I will suggest that you go in for a newer version of Red Hat Linux - 7.3 or 8.0 since 7.0 is quite old now with an older kernel version.

Suppose one of your hard disks is Primary Master (hda in Linux) and the other one is Secondary Master (hdc). Assuming Win 2K is on hda and linux is on hdc, the options are:

1. Make a boot disk for linux while installing linux. Though its ok for emergency use, its just not advisable to use it daily for loading linux because of the poor quality of floppy disks available with low reliability.

2. Install LILO on the MBR of hda and make an entry for Win 2K either while installing linux or subsequently by editing the /etc/lilo.conf file and rewriting LILO to the MBR. I am not sure about RHL 7.0 but I have seen in RHL 7.2 and subsequent releases that LILO is able to boot Win 2K.

3. Install LILO on the super sector of the root partition on hdc and then boot with a floppy. Use the dd command to copy the boot sector to hda as a file. Make an entry in the NT Loader Menu for booting linux.

In my opinion, option 2 is the best. However if you need some documentation, I might be able to send some to you offlist. Do let me know.

I am installing LILO in Red Hat Linux 7.0 version in dual boot with Windows 2000 Professional with Win 2K Pro being on HDD 1 and Linux on HDD 2. But in the installation when LILO screen comes up, it only shows linux partition, it doesn't show DOS partition, so I still haven't installed LILO, please note this is during installation that this is seen. Should I go ahead and install LILO still, according to some tutorials it says instead of installing on MBR, I should install LILO on 1st sector of HDD, that would solve the problem and make it dual boot. I am not sure about this so I am sending this email to confirm before I go ahead and install LILO on 1st sector of HDD. Please guide me about this point. I don't want to end up just seeing and booting LInux with my Win 2k Pro going to waste. Will installing on 1st sector of HDD solve the problem ? How do I configure LILO to see my DOS partition ?
Neil.
