The problem here is that your printer is 'spooling' the job.

If you investigate the 'ifhp' print filter you will find a
very strange option - 'waitend'.

This causes the filter NOT to exit until the job is done or
printer has finished with it.

Of course if there is an error,  all bets are off, ifhp will
exit,  and your 'ae' script should be prepared for this.
