Hello, I've been trying almost everything possible to get the LPRng configuration set
up
correctly. I'm just using this on my home PC, and am not connected to a network.
Everytime
I try to do anything, such as lpq or lpr -Pauto1 myfile, I get this error message:
Status Information:

connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - Connection timed out
Make sure LPD server is running on the server
I'll try to give as much information as possible:
system: Customized Glibc 2.2/Linux kernel 2.4 system, similar to Slackware.
printer: HP Deskjet 520, connected via the parallel port lp0.
filter: APSfilter 6.1.1
postscript software: GNU Ghostscript 6.51
LPRng 3.7.5

/etc/hosts contains the line
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
in addition to my isp host/domain.
I have ran checkpc -f, and it made fixes. I have done ps -aux | grep lpd to
make sure that lpd is running. I have tried restarting lpd with lpc reread. I
have the right modules compiled and dmesg confirms that they are loaded
correctly: lp, parport, and parport_pc. I can get the printer to work by doing
a cat > /dev/lp0. I have checked my rc.d scripts and they correctly load lpd and
the kernel modules.
Also, I tried reinstalling from source several times. Still, lpr keeps giving me
the same error. I tried recompiling and installing from source several times.
There is nothing in the /var/spool log files.
The only thing that did work is that apsfilter printed the testpage correctly
(using ghostscript's printing driver directly).
Could anyone point me to what I am doing wrong here? Thank you!
