Ok, I just fixed this problem. According to the LPRng-HOWTO this is a "feature" of the Solaris and other SysV clients. To accommodate them, there are lpd.conf options return_short_status, reverse_lpq_status, and short_status_length. Our previous installation of LPRng had them enabled but I wasn't aware that the old lpd.conf was customized and the replaced it with the default LPRng 3.4.9 lpd.conf.
