Wouldn't the test where lpd sent output to a file and the
later the file was manually cat-ed to /dev/lp0 rule
out these problems?

The system does seem to have interrupt problems occasionally,
although not related to printing. When burning a cd by
reading the iso off /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (ATPI) to
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 (scsiII, second controller) I seem to
receive reduced data rates on the modem (inbound), external
serial. IIRC at least. I just figured it was ide/atpi/
designed inability of cdrom to seek related problem.
