Hello,

I have a problem with an Epson Stylus Photo 890, USB, which most of the
time is just fine but occasionally hangs itself part-way through a job.
No data seems to be sent to the printer any more, at least the sending
process doesn't terminate, until after half an hour or so lprng removes
the processes and sets the job status to error.

Can anyone tell what the likely cause is?
How to go about debugging it?

The debugging option are a bit unclear to me, the docs are a bit brief.
is "lpc debug queue 5" the same as as lpc debug
lpr+5,lprm+5,network+5,..."? Does lpr+5,network+2 set the debug level
for "lpr" to 5, for "network" to 2, and all others to 0? With lpc debug
all 2 nothing is written to the log at all during the 20min the job
needs to print, which means what I am really interested in is missing.

Which name exactly do I use? I need to trace the unspooler and how it
sends the data to the printer. lpr, lprm, etc are of no interest. Which
settings should I use?

The job status after submission (empty queue) is "active". This seems
to be checked at each lpr, lprm. After perhaps 1-3 minutes have passed,
the status changes to "stalled" with either an lpr or lprm, but
sometimes it stays "active". Is this normal? The jobs seem to complete
fine.

More details:

printer device /dev/usb/lp0
modules usbcore, uhci
SuSE Linux 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18
lprng 3.8.5
ghostscript device stp
motherboard is First VB601 (about mid 1999) with Intel 440BX chipset
direct cable from usb port to printer, no hub

A typical process tree looks like:

  |-lpd,1361)
  | `-lpd,3661)
  | `-lpd,5522)
  | `-if,5523) /usr/lib/lpdfilter/bin/if -Avolker@ruru+878 -CA -D2002-
07-30-23:59:10.338 -Ff -Hruru.local ...
  | |-if,5545) /usr/lib/lpdfilter/bin/if -Avolker@ruru+878 -CA -D2
002-07-30-23:59:10.338 -Ff -Hruru.local ...
  | |-cat,5546) -
  | |-cat,5547)
  | |-if,5550) /usr/lib/lpdfilter/bin/if -Avolker@ruru+878 -CA -D2
002-07-30-23:59:10.338 -Ff -Hruru.local ...
  | | `-cat,5553) -
  | `-if,5554) /usr/lib/lpdfilter/bin/if -Avolker@ruru+878 -CA -D2
002-07-30-23:59:10.338 -Ff -Hruru.local ...
  | `-gs,5555) @/etc/lpdfilter/best/upp -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dSAFER

None of the processes terminate when the printer hangs (i.e. returns
head to home position and sits there blinking busy).

Thanks for any hints,

Volker
