Thank you very much indeed for your response.

For the OS X laptop: we've tried printing ps files from the command
line using lpr (ps files produced by groff), and also tried printing
from Word for the Mac. I actually don't know if Word-for-the-Mac
produces PS files or not (presumably it does?). In any case, the
result is the same. LPRng running on the Debian printer server rejects
the job and the error message in /var/log/lpr.log is the one I
reported:

Jul 19 18:25:16 toraigh SERVER[1450]: Service_connection: short
request line '^B', from '192.168.1.101 port 856'
Jul 19 18:25:46 toraigh SERVER[1451]: Service_connection: short
request line '^B', from '192.168.1.101 port 855'

The native language of the LJ1100 printer is PCL. The relevant stanza
of the printcap file on the Debian box to which it is physically
connected (and which receives print-requests from the other machines
in the network) is the following:

lp|hplj1100|HP Laserjet 1100:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj1100:\
        :sh:pw#80:pl#66:px#1440:mx#0:\
        :if=/etc/magicfilter/ljet4-filter:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

As I said, this deals fine with printing-requests both from the Debian
box itself (groff, TeX, xpdf, Xprint, OpenOffice ...) and with
printing-requests from the laptop which also runs LPRng.

Only the OS X laptop (running CUPS) has problems.

Thanks again,

Jim
