Hi, All: Along the discussions of this document(and also its LSR companion document (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-many-lsr-power-group/), is there anyone consider the possibilities of power-aware TE in distributed manner plausible?
In the document, it states: "PCPPS leverages Constraint-based Shortest Path Forwarding (CSPF). CSPF can be centralized or distributed. When it is centralized, a Path Computation Element (PCE) calculates a path for every flow in the network. When it is distributed, each node calculates a path for each flow that originates on it." But, in distributed mode, if "each node calculate a path for each flow that originates on it", how can this node know the traffic from other nodes do not pass one of the sleep-capable interfaces that it just moves out of the traffic? If the nodes within the network can't coordinate their decisions, I think it is impossible to achieve the distributed power-aware TE aim. Please also be reminded, RSVP style TE is fading out of the network due to its stateful table stress. Such aim can only achieved via the centralized mode, or via the management system. Then, please drop the "distributed" proposal from this document.(and also the protocol extensions proposal in LSR) Best Regards Aijun Wang China Telecom -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of OSCAR GONZALEZ DE DIOS Sent: Friday, August 28, 2026 4:33 PM To: [email protected]; Getting Ready for Energy-Efficient Networking Discussion List <[email protected]> Cc: TEAS WG <[email protected]> Subject: [Teas] RV: Call for adoption: draft-many-teas-power-steering-01 (Ends 2026-09-10) Dear LSR and GREEN WG chairs and participants, During the last IETF we had a good number of people within the TEAS working group interested in working on power-aware traffic engineering. You might be interested in following the call for adoption which has just started in TEAS on draft-many-teas-power-steering-01, which is the first document presented to the working group related to the topic. I believe we need to keep the closed relation among the working groups to ensure the coherency among the works. Looking forward for your inputs and cooperation. This message starts a teas WG Call for Adoption of: draft-many-teas-power-steering-01 This Working Group Call for Adoption ends on 2026-09-10 Abstract: Many networks have a daily utilization pattern. For example, a network might be busy during the day and less busy at night. If the network is robust, it has enough capacity to satisfy demand during peak hours and excess capacity during non-peak hours. That excess capacity increases energy costs and environmental impact. This document introduces a Power Conserving Path Placement Strategy (PCPPS). When possible, PCPPS concentrates traffic onto a small set of network resources. When traffic is concentrated onto a small set of network resources, other network resources become idle and can be powered down until they are needed again. This solves the problem of excess capacity during non-peak hours. Please reply to this message and indicate whether or not you support adoption of this Internet-Draft by the teas WG. Comments to explain your preference are greatly appreciated. Please reply to all recipients of this message and include this message in your response. Authors, and WG participants in general, are reminded of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) disclosure obligations described in BCP 79 [2]. Appropriate IPR disclosures required for full conformance with the provisions of BCP 78 [1] and BCP 79 [2] must be filed, if you are aware of any. Sanctions available for application to violators of IETF IPR Policy can be found at [3]. All authors replied to the IPR poll that was carried out as part of the preparation for polling for WG adoption and they all claimed that they were aware of IPR that applies to this draft and was disclosed according to IETF rules. You can find the disclosed IPR in https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/7283/.
