thanks for posting this! I audited Larry Diamond's class at Stanford on Democratic Consolidation and really learned a lot. I think he's right that we are at a fragile moment that could go forward or go sideways...
I also think that we are at a pivotal democratic renewal moment...I testified in Congress just last Wednesday on the positive reforms happening--under the radar screen to be sure--especially with this White House. But throughout history, the tug of war between the White House and Congress has resulted in a push back to re size the consolidation of power in the Executive Branch (Something Trump has really driven gas on the pedal like a Mack truck) Here's the witness testimony and the public witness clip from the hearing (min 23)--I'm calling it an "Article One Renaissance" which we need to make a talking point in this election year! Lots of important and good things are happening...There was also a hearing just on strengthening Article One in the Rules Committee (a huge deal and totally bipartisan) and we need to hold the center down so we can make it through the chaos to the next iteration of democracy-- https://docs.house.gov/Committee/Calendar/ByEvent.aspx?EventID=110517 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reMOFc8V7PA On Fri, Mar 6, 2020 at 12:26 PM Yosem Companys <[email protected]> wrote: > Saving Democracy: Larry Diamond in SF > > Date/Time: > Tue, April 28, 2020 > 06:00PM - 08:30PM > > Venue: > Jewish Community Center of San Francisco > > Location: > 3200 California Street, San Francisco CA 94118 > Map address > > Registration Period: > 02/25/2020-04/27/2020 > > Price: > $30 for alumni and guests; $25 young class of 2010 and younger > > Contact: > Ms. Julie Whitcomb > [email protected] > > Democracy seems to be in retreat around the world as authoritarian regimes > are becoming bolder and more repressive, elected leaders are abusing > constitutional norms, and illiberal populist parties are making electoral > gains.
