I also triggered this failure on a RHEL6 machine, with rsyslog installed.

The failure occurs because log file recorded neither in /var/log/cron
nor in /var/log/message. So it's easy to solve this problem: make sure 
corresponding cron logging item in /etc/rsyslog.conf exists and start
rsyslog service.

Since you may use a different syslog service, it's hard to write a patch to
this case. But the solution to this issue is similar above.
