I am using compaq 575's as well. I had the same resolution problems with the
onboard video card. I too bought a used Trident 4mb pci card and it works
great - not sure of the make and model...just that it is a trident chip. It
cost me $19.00 used. It runs 1024X768. I'm not sure if it runs higher than
that.

find a card
which will run at 1280x1024 for 20 quid!
