what runlevel are you running the workstation in ?

It is controlled by an entry in the lts.conf file.

Look for 'RUNLEVEL = x'.  
I'm guessing you have runlevel 4 setup.

Runlevel 4 will give you a login on the server.  then, if you run 
'startx', you are running it
on the server, which is not what you want to do.

So, for starting Xwindows on the workstation, you have 2 choices:

1) use RUNLEVEL = 5, Xwindows will automatically start.

2) use RUNLEVEL = 3.  You will get a bash shell prompt.  then,
    you can type:    sh /tmp/start_ws
   that will bring up the Xserver on the workstation.
