Hi LTSP users,
FYI:
I installed latest OpenOffice beta on my Linux SuSE 7.3 server (use
"setup -net" option). Also installed is latest LTSP (of course), fontserver
and MS truetype fonts and KDE 2.2.2. [We should add this to LTSP font
package, at least a download script and description. SuSE distro does it
that way. It's not part of SuSE, but you are allowed to download and install
form the MS server.]
After my experience with Star/OpenOffice, I'd say final OpenOffice might
become the most important application running on LTSP thin clients on top of
(probably) KDE, for the non technical user. On the Server OpenOffice looks
and prints very nice (due to the TrueType fonts). The applications are
comparable to MS office 2000. The import of MS-word (2000 *.doc) is the best
I've ever seen so far. With OpenOffice on the server a second LTSP user also
profits remarkably. So in short: I am very pleased with OpenOffice and am
waiting for the final (german for me) version.
However, I have minor character-set and major (true type) font problems
starting OpenOffice *on the LTSP clients* using KDE. OO is not displaying TT
fonts at all and behaves unstable if I try (at least in my setup). Using
K-apps or
Mozilla (non K) those MS TT fonts work fine from the client against the
fontsserver.
