Since some time I'm using aumix/xaumix to control sound on a
ltsp-workstation (running in text-mode resp. under X-Window).
These tools are ncurses/gtk+ based and provide a nice gui.
All available properties of the card are under control with
full mixer support (volume and balance).

It's not perfect, feedback appreciated.
Test it on non-production systems. You have been warned.
