Sorry to hear about your problems, and I don't know if I can help you,
since I have not used Red Hat or k12ltsp. I do have some understanding
of general GNU/Linux and LTSP though, that might be helpful.

Some advices/points:

Can you revert to you old working installation? If so, that might be
your best shot since you have limited time to get the new installation
going. But you already know that.

As you indicate, you need to get the display manager going. That does
not require a functional Xserver *on the LTSP server* though. If you
have problems with X identifying the video card on the LTSP server,
you could still have a fully functional display manager serving the
diskless clients. Actually I use my own home computer that way.

Now, as I don't use Red Hat, I am not able to help you get the display
manager going.

The some-kind-of-line you wrote about is probably the pipe sign "|".
In my swedish keyboard, I get the | sign by pressing Alt-Gr and "<"
(the key between Shift and "Z"). In the example in the LTSP manual it
was used to filter out unnecessary information, so you didn't miss
anything by not using it.

Try this command

ps aux | grep dm

If it returns nothing, then you probably have no display manager
running, and you have to start one.

If it does return lines containing one of "kdm" or "gdm" or "xdm",
then you will have to configure that one to serve clients, see the
LTSP manual again.

Good Luck
